"If you never heal from what hurt you, you'll bleed on people who never cut you." - Rich Wilkerson Jr.
Being a parent is tough. Really tough. I have two boys. - Carson 8 years old and Chandler who's one. They're awesome, most of the time. I love watching my kids grow up and compete especially. When Carson was younger I didn't take him to be much of a competitive person, until he was 6 years old and we went to the kids Savage Race. Carson had to complete two laps of this .5 mile course. Going over hay bales, carrying a log, climbing an obstacle, running through a creek and some over fun stuff. After the 1st lap Carson was close to the leader and building a lead on the 3rd place kid. I remember watching him grab the log and put it on his shoulder while looking back to see where the kid in 3rd was and Carson some how found some other gear and took off. Carson couldn't speak cause of his high heart rate and me being hesitant actually said "you can slow down" worried for his health. Looking back, I was placing my outlook on life on him.{My past cuts (failures) were bleeding onto him}.
Don't push too hard, don't fail, don't make a mistake. Was something always said to me growing up by my coaches, parents, and peers. Everyone always wanted the safe road and it led to a lot of self doubt and questioning my decisions (still does to this day). I became a people pleaser, instead of doing things for myself. I try, even though it is very tough sometimes, very very tough. To speak words of encouragement, effort, and positive attitude to Carson. Those attributes create self confidence and give him the tools needed for success on the field and off the field, both personally and in a team setting.
We must find and accept our past cuts (failures) and accept them. Know what brings them out and how we project them onto those closest around. Then we can create strategies to change our words and rewire our brain to effect positive change in the world around us.
